Hi guys! I’m Christina Benjamin and I’m excited to have a chance to chat with you on Rissa Blakeley’s blog. I decided to go with a topic that’s important to me as a writer.
I want to talk about how important it is that we take the time to inspire others to follow in our footsteps as writers. Whether you write for fun or to get your feelings out, or you hope to publish your work someday, writing is such an incredibly important part of our history as humans.
I write the YA fiction series, The Geneva Project and speak at schools to help inspire young writers to pursue their interest in language arts. I often say that writing has saved my life and I truly believe it. Writing has always been there for me. Whether I was disappearing into a book to escape or writing words that were just too painful to speak, books and writing have gotten me through some arduous times in my life.
I didn’t publish my first book until I was in my 30s. I knew I always loved writing, but I never thought that I was good enough to be a writer as my career. That’s why I am so passionate about encouraging those interested in writing to do so, because I can only imagine where I’d be if I had pursued writing when I first fell in love with it.
The important thing that I tell students is that the wonderful thing about being a writer is that anyone can do it. All you have to do to be a writer, is write! It’s that simple. And the great part is, there is no wrong way to be a writer. Write a blog, write a poem, write in a journal, write music, write a memoir, write a novel.
Each of us is unique and no one else views the world the same way as you do, so the story you write will always be unique and worth telling. You have a voice and if you have the ache to share it, please do. You never know how you will influence those around you. Maybe you’ll tell the story someone has been searching for.
